Around 4,000 residents of Burghfield and Mortimer are set to have a full fibre broadband connection by the end of the month, writes Amy Cowan.

Gigaclear, the Abingdon-based communications provider, has been upgrading communication infrastructure in rural England, and Burghfield is the next to benefit.

Work began in June 2023, with engineers extending Ufton Nervet and Stratfield Mortimer’s network using fibre optic cables. The workers have been street to street, digging new trenches and reaching each property in the area, the company said.

The majority of homes and businesses are expected to have full broadband access by October.

Senior project manager, Oli Ward, said the company “is working hard to ensure rural, often hard to reach communities such as Burghfield and Mortimer can access the same fast and reliable full fibre broadband enjoyed by larger urban areas”.

He added: “Taking our full fibre to rural communities that would otherwise have copper or an inferior broadband connection fundamentally changes them for the better because it creates choice for the people in those communities about how they work and how they live their lives.”

And now it won’t be long until those in Burghfield can experience this full fibre change for themselves.
