Results for the 2024 Newbury & District Agricultural Society ploughing match
The results are in for the 2024 Newbury & District Agricultural Society ploughing match.
The annual competition was held at Rookery Farm in Curridge on Saturday (October 19) and it featured 40 ploughmen competing in 10 different classes.
There were competitors from the local area and across the UK operating the latest state-of-the-art machinery, vintage tractors, working steam engines and horse-drawn ploughs.
On the day, ploughing match chairman Judith Marcham said: “We’re encouraging young people to have a go.
“There’s a class which has got six entries of people who have probably never ploughed before, having a go to see if they can do it.
“We have got very experienced ploughmen as well. You will see all levels of ploughing here and it is a really good day.”
The Harris Challenge Cup awarded for the chairman’s choice in the art of ploughing was won by Alfie Owens, who also picked up the Mr & Mrs C Povey Cup for the Champion Ploughman of 2024.
The James Puxley Cup presented to this year’s champion novice ploughman was won by Al Cartwright.
David Bailey won the PJS Cup for champion vintage ploughman and the James & Cowper Cp for reserve champion ploughman.
Mr Bailey travelled from Farringdon in Oxfordshire to take part in the match.
He said: “This, believe it or not, was one of the first matches I ever came to when I got hooked on this hobby about 10 years ago.
“Then my wife bought me a tractor for my 50th birthday and here I am competing today.”
As well as the different ploughing contests, there were also a range of domestic competitions on the day, ranging from the best sloe gin and hedgerow liqueur to the tastiest lemon cake and jar of chutney.
