There, the 42-year-old, of Rutherford Walk, Tilehurst, was charged with intentionally strangling Harvey Morland.

He was further accused of assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest.

Both offences were said to have happened in Tilehurst on Monday, January 8.

Mr Dennis, who was legally represented by Tom Brymer, spoke only to confirm his details and to plead not guilty to both charges.

The trial is expected to last a day and a half, the court heard.

District judge Samuel Goozee explained that he could elect trial at the magistrates’ court or before a judge and jury sitting at Reading Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Mr Dennis opted for the latter.

He was meanwhile released on unconditional bail.
